    Grand & Snelling
    hey there,

What does everybody think about the shops at Grand & Snelling? Like the bakery (which I go to alot!), the juice shop, and the coffee place, kinko's (I go there too) etc. etc.
I think we should get some more places to eat and stuff, although these are prety cool nonetheless ...

    emails
Someone said they called about their email and then it started working, so yesterday I emailed them about it and got this back:

I believe first-year students' email accounts creation and setup are not
complete at the moment. So it will work for some and not others. They
will all be fully functional when orientation starts, or perhaps a bit
    before that.

    hey guys--

i'm not sure if any of you guys are newsweek readers, but this came up in a recent issue:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9022918/site/newsweek

i used it to block AIM and internet explorer so i could knock out a good chunk of Don Quixote last night. yeah, i have no self-control, but this is cool, right? just thought some of you might get a kick out of it.

also: should i have the textbook listed in the course guide for my first year class by the first class session? i'm absolutely clueless about professors' expectations regarding having the books ahead of time. does anyone know where we buy them?

    blah. and still no facebook...

ok. so i'm trying to make sure i'll have everything i need (thus eliminating last-minute shopping)... and i'm wondering... how high are the beds? will they be high enough to put regular under-bed rubbermaid-type plastic boxes underneath them? or should i find an alternative storage option?

    Well I'm bored...
SO! I'm posting here. Because I know you guys are all bored too. (Almost 2 weeks exactly until orientation!)

Random questions to possibly encourage discussion...

Anyone thinking of joining any clubs/groups/organizations yet? There's a ton that sound kind of interesting to me, and I'm afraid if I try them all out I won't have any time! Plus I need a job...

Anyone got any good ideas for jobs, for someone who doesn't have work study in their aid package? Actually, on this topic, anyone have any idea how hard it is to get one of the cushy/boring jobs if you aren't getting first pick? (Yes I know it'd probably be better to ask this in macalester)

Other questions... How many people are gonna rent a fridge? My roommate and I are getting the $60 one, so this is purely a curiosity-based question.

And speaking of things to fill a dorm room, anyone thinking about bringing a TV? Gaming equipment? DVD player? Um... Lava lamp? :) I swear I'm not asking so I can mooch or steal! :P

Oh, and I don't remember quite how large the doubles in Dupre are -- is it a good idea to have a beanbag chair or something of the sort? Or would that just crowd things?

Okay, back off to my boring wonderfully fantastic existence. ;D

Good news: '09 E-mail addresses are up. Find yours at http://www.macalester.edu/directory.html
    Bad news: Passwords?

I've tried my SSN and the password system that the official web board used. No luck.

    Bikes
Is anyone else bringing a bike? I can't decide if I should bring mine or not. Is there any place to store them during the winter?

PS- The first day of classes is also my birthday!

    it's that time of year
Let's play a game called "Do I really need to pack this?"!

    Here goes...

    a set of silverware?
    A formal dress?
    a mug for cocoa?
    books?
a cd player? (other than the one on my laptop)
    dvds?
    board games?

feel free to add your own as well. i'm sure there are things that i've forgotten to ask about.

    hooray

    im in dupre 512
and my first year course is "Book Arts: An Investigation into the Poetic Possibilites of the Book Form"

now the final frontier: mac email

well mine will be dangle@mac. haha.

The emails were originally supposed be set up August 1st, but there has been a delay according to the webboard: http://webboard.macalester.edu/read?3216,122

hopefully this nifty yearbook-esque CD will hold me over until the emails are set up.

by the way, has anyone else discovered the mac traditions song called Masturbate Over You?

    ah, im so excited.

me = owned by the usps:
Saturday I awoke to my alarm at 1230, watched the mailman shove things into our box, and darted out in my pjs.

I discovered something with Macalester at the top... an issue of mac today about the alumni.

    damn.

I'm terribly jealous of all of you who have courses, rooms, and mates.

    Name: Megan
    Email/AIM/anything else: MeganAnneMac (AIM), megan.macpherson@gmail.com
    Hometown: Beaverton, OR
Favorite Book: ugh, can't even decide. Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, The Great Gatsby, The Redwall series, Ender's Game, Under the Banner of Heaven, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Sandy Bottom Orchestra, Kite Runner, Fugitive Pieces, Harry Potter
    Favorite Author: Garrison Keillor
Favorite Movie: My Best Friend's Wedding, Spaceballs, A Walk to Remember (i bet i'll get flack for this), My Fellow Americans, Waking Ned Devine
Favorite Band/Individual Performer: dispatch, ben folds/five, jimmy eat world, switchfoot, earth wind and fire
Pastimes: goofing off with friends, marching band, reading, scrapbooking, exploring the great outdoors, TPing, drinking boba tea, playing board games, playing the piano poorly, reminiscing
Why Mac: It was the only place that clicked completely after a visit. The internationalism, the academics, the small college community, and of course the bagipe band were all really appealing to me.
How sure are you that you're attending: got my dorm assignment in the mail yesterday.
Topic of admissions essay: marching band
Potential Major: international studies, environmental studies, math? essentially, i'm clueless.
Favorite Mac alumnus: you can't beat the Kofi (that is, unless you unearth an oil for food scandal).

I'm in Dupre 420, taking Regional Geography of the US and Canada. I've always loved looking through atlases, so getting a more in-depth look at the social side of the map should be cool. I'm looking forward to talking with new people, so feel free to IM me!
